At Visionaire Eyecare of Edmonds, our goal isn't simply to help you achieve 20/20 or better vision, because seeing well does NOT translate to having healthy eyes.

Eye health can only be determined by a proper eye exam. There are many eye diseases, such as glaucoma, that do not manifest any symptoms until it is too late. By then, there may be irreversible vision loss that could have been prevented, or slowed down, by early detection from an eye exam.

We want to help make sure that your current vision and future vision will stay sharp and clear for years to come by ensuring that your eyes remain healthy.

Our comprehensive eye exam goes beyond 20/20 to evaluate many aspects of your eyes with specialized tests:

  • Complete Ocular Health Assessment - Are your eyes healthy? We examine the outside and inside of your eyes to make sure they are completely healthy with our specialized instruments. We dilate the pupils with special eye drops to open them up for a thorough evaluation to screen for such problems as; cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, hypertension, diabetes, tumors, etc. When there is a medical eye problem, rest assured that we will educate you on the condition and properly treat it.

  • Visual Acuity at Near - Is your vision clear and single at close distances? Clarity at short distances is critical to reading, writing, close work, computer use, etc.

  • Eye Teaming Skills - Do your two eyes aim, move, and work together as a coordinated team? If not, you may probably experience eyestrain, headaches, and poor depth perception.

  • Eye Focusing Skills - Do your eyes maintain clear vision at all distances? Rapid, automatic eye focus adjustment is critical to learning, reading, writing, sports, etc. Deficiencies can cause visual fatigue, reduced reading comprehension, and/or avoidance of close work or other activities.

  • Eye Movement Skills - Do your eye movements show adequate muscle control, tracking, fixation, etc.? In the classroom or at work, normal eye movements allow rapid and accurate shifting of the eyes along a line of print or from book to desk to board, etc. In sports, efficient eye movements contribute to eye-hand coordination, visual reaction time, and accurate tracking.

Normal retinaAlong with patient education about your eyes, you will receive a personalized vision and eye health report to go along with your examination here at Visionaire Eyecare in Edmonds, WA.

We recommend eye exams every 1-2 years. The frequency of the interval depends on one's personal and family health history. The greater number of risk factors for eye disease, the sooner we advise you to have your eyes examined and screened for any potential eye disease. Some common, but perhaps not obvious risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Be sure you use your eye care insurance every one to two years, and keep your eyes in their best health. We are listed eye care providers with most insurance plans, such as V.S.P, Regence, Premera, EyeMed, etc. Call our Edmonds office at 425-670-9888 for an appointment today.

Dr. Randy L. Wong is the parent of two young children, and understands your concerns about your child's healthy vision. As you watch your child's eyes begin to track their surroundings, and as you see them following along as you read to them, many developmental stages of your child's sight will give you important clues about your child's vision.

During the infant and toddler years, your child has been developing many vision skills, while learning how to see. In the preschool years, this process continues as your child develops visually guided eye-hand-body coordination, fine motor skills, and the visual motor skills necessary to learn to read.

As a parent, you should watch for signs that may indicate a vision development problem. These include a short attention span for the child's age, difficulty with eye-hand-body coordination in ball play and bike riding, avoidance of coloring and puzzles, and other detailed activities.
There are daily things that you can do at home to help your preschooler's vision develop as it should. These activities include reading aloud to your child, and letting him or her see what you are reading. Providing a chalkboard, finger paints, and different shaped blocks, and showing your child how to use them in imaginative play; providing safe opportunities to use playground equipment like a jungle gym and balance beam; and allowing time for interaction with other children and playing independently.
By age three, your child should have a thorough eye examination to make sure your preschooler's vision is developing properly and to screen for any potential eye disease. If necessary, Dr. Wong may prescribe treatment including glasses and/or vision therapy to correct a vision development problem.

Child with phoropterThe Seattle area is famous for good schools and good education. However, a good education for your child depends on a number of factors including good schools, good teachers, and good vision. Your child's eyes are constantly in use in the classroom and while playing. So when their vision is not functioning properly, learning and participation in recreational activities will suffer. Here are the basic vision skills needed for school use.

  • Near vision - The ability to see clearly and comfortably at 10-13 inches.

  • Distance vision - The ability to see clearly and comfortably beyond arm's reach.

  • Binocular coordination - The ability to use both eyes together.

  • Eye movement skills - The ability to aim the eyes accurately, move them smoothly across a page. and shift them quickly and accurately from one object to another.

  • Focusing skills - The ability to keep both eyes accurately focused at the proper distance to see clearly and to change focus quickly.

  • Peripheral awareness - The ability to be aware of things located to the side while looking straight ahead.

  • Eye/hand coordination - The ability to use the eyes and hands together.

If any of these or other vision skills are lacking and not functioning properly, your child will have to work harder. This can lead to headaches, visual fatigue, and other eyestrain problems. As a parent, be alert for symptoms that may indicate your child has a vision or visual processing problem. Be sure to tell Dr. Wong if your child frequently;

  • Loses their place while reading

  • Avoids close work

  • Holds reading material closer than normal

  • Tends to rub their eyes

  • Has headaches

  • Turns or tilts their head to use one eye only

  • Makes frequent reversals when reading or writing

  • Uses finger to maintain place when reading

  • Omits or confuses small words when reading

  • Consistently performs below potential

Since vision changes can occur without you or your child noticing them, your child should see the eye doctor at least every two years, or more frequently, if specific problems or risk factors exist. If appropriate, the doctor can prescribe treatment including eyeglasses, contact lenses, or vision therapy. Remember, a school vision or pediatrician's screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive and thorough eye examination.
